As a Travel Photographer, time spent in between adventures is both a blessing and a curse. Blessing, because there’s nothing like sleeping in my own coma-inducing cloud/bed or eating a home-cooked meal. Curse, because of unexciting responsibilities, chores, and reality in general. On Winter days when the heat’s out, the dog pees on the Christmas Tree, or the upstairs neighbors are introducing their toddler to bowling, Instagram is my favorite way to temporarily disengage from my day and take a micro-vacation. Mostly, I love scouring hashtags like #travel and #livetoexplore to find new amazing locations to add to my bucket-list and to remind me how beautiful the world is. But sometimes, I just want to laugh at some of the great idiosyncrasies of the world and the ridiculous things that travelers see and do…
To that end, I present my favorite hilarious travel accounts of Instagram!
Passenger Shaming – @passengershaming
Shake your head along with Flight Attendants and Frequent Flyers at some of the absurd/nasty things that people do on airplanes. We’ve all seen the obnoxious leg spreaders or the oblivious clippers of nails, but this account will introduce some mile-high behaviors you’ve never even considered… many of them NSFW.
The TSA – @tsa
You might not think that the TSA has a sense of humor, but someone in their social media department certainly does! In the official TSA Instagram account, you’ll see some of the crazy things they confiscate at security and finally understand why they have so many seemingly obvious signs about what is (throwing stars) and isn’t (apple pie) considered contraband. You’ll also get some valuable and seasonally appropriate tips about getting through security more efficiently.

Is this some kind of confangled rotisserie contraption for turkeys? Nope. These are Sai. If you’re a #TeenageMutantTurtle fan, you’ll know the Sai as Raphael’s weapon or choice. If you still have no clue, a Sai is a weapon used for striking, bludgeoning and punctures. Whatever it is you use them for, please know they must be packed in checked baggage. These were discovered in a carry-on bag at Boise (BOI). #TheMoreYouKnow
People on the Underground – @peopleontheunderground
From crazy costumes to late night partiers, public transit is maybe the world’s best source of stealthy people watching. I’ve had a few of my own epic sightings on Chicago’s Red Line, but these take things to a whole new level. Take a look for some bizarre sights you might find on a commute through London, but be prepared, many of them are very NSFW!
Artisanal Urinal – @artisanalurinal
I always just assumed that Ladies bathrooms would be a little nicer, a little cleaner, a little fancier (isn’t that why we spend so much time in there?), but I never put much thought into what might lie beyond the Men’s Room door… When I found this feed a whole new world opened up to me. Ladies, apparently the beauty and excitement of foreign architecture extend to urinals as well. Time to finally see how the other half live and take a world tour of swanky Men’s Rooms.
Overhead New York – @overheardnewyork
Born and raised in New York City, I like to think I possess the unflappable snarky wit of my people. We’re sarcastic, jaded, and at times, a little douchey. While this feed doesn’t post much in the way of photographs, the quotes instantly transport me to the joyful frenzy of shopping at Zabar’s, or the “hurry the hell up you dumb ogling tourist” sensation of visiting Times Square. I love this account for keeping my NYC homesickness at bay.
You Did Not Sleep There – @youdidnotsleepthere
Perhaps my favorite travel feed, this one curates some of the “most illogical campsites” you’ll find on Instagram. From tents on top of car roofs, to hammocks over chasms, these images might be great for artsy travel campaigns, but realistic they are not. I have often wondered if people are actually sleeping in the rugged locations they photograph their tents, and I guess I have my answer. The consensus is: it may look sweet for a picture, but you definitely did not sleep there.
