Timelapse artist Joel Schat has made his fair share of beautiful time-lapse films, but few of Schat’s films are as bear bones as “Life Begins At The End of Your Comfort Zone”.
Schat told me:
I always find inspiration in those beautiful photographs with the inspirational quote overlaid. So when I first laid eyes on the stunning Lower Lewis waterfalls in Southwest Washington state, I thought creating a short film with an inspirational quote would be a new take on an old trick. I called my buddy Ben Canales and told him of my idea, and he immediately volunteered his exceptional filming services.
Canales, armed with a Sony FS7, waited across the falls as Schat approached the 43 foot high cliff edge.
I am usually not scared of much, but being up that high, looking down at the powerful falls was both beautiful and intimidating. At that moment, I think I was definitely out of my comfort zone, and that’s when the inspirational quote hit me. ‘Life Begins At The End Of Your Comfort Zone’. I took a deep breath and hurled myself over the edge…
Canales, being a the co-founder of Uncage The Soul Video Productions, nailed the shot perfectly in 180 frame per second super slow motion. Never one to be upstaged, Canales put the camera away and took his turn at finding the edge of his comfort zone.
It definitely is more intimidating when you get up there. After I saw Joel do it, I thought ‘how hard could it be?’ But I was in for a shock when I saw how high that cliff was! But never one to back down for a challenge, I stepped out of my comfort zone and just went for it. And it turned out to be one of the coolest things I had done in a while!”
