We first found Morten Rustad  when we published his popular ’10 Must See Places in Norway’ video. It was obvious from the time-lapse clips in the video that Rustad was a talented filmmaker, but with his latest film, ‘South America 8K’, Rustad proves that he is one of the best, and hardest working, time-lapsers in the business.

On Rustad’s website, he describes the incredible about of work that went into developing the nearly eight minutes of jaw dropping scenes from some of South America’s most pristine locations.

One year of travel, nine countries, countless hours on buses, motorbikes, and cars. Hundreds of thousands of images taken. 30TB of data used, 5 months of editing. The time-lapse film features South America like it has never been before with images from Brazil, Venezuela, Guyana, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador.

And Rustad is right. We have never seen South America quite like this. We sat down with the filmmaker to talk briefly about the process of making a film of this magnitude.

“The sheer amount of work that goes into these films, and this one in particular, is staggering. What was the most challenging aspect of creating this film?”

I think being in a completely new country where everything is different from home was the most difficult thing about this project. I didn’t know the language, any people, and most importantly I didn’t know how the nature behaved. As time went by I got more experience and things got easier, and I got more confidence that I could handle the conditions.

“Most of your scenes involve remote sections of nature. Is so much solitude challenging when creating your films? Do you ever feel the need to stay in a town for a couple of days to find some human interaction?”

I enjoy spending time with only nature and myself, so that was never really a problem. A book or a podcast can make me feel a little less lonely if needed.

“Can you tell us a little about your next project? How about your ultimate ‘dream’ film?”

I’m aiming for a trip to Pakistan this summer if everything goes as planed. A big dream for me would be to do a sequel in Africa, but that would require extensive planning and funding.

After watching Rustad’s vision of South America, it’s easy to get excited for his trip and film from Pakistan, as well as his other future adventures. We will undoubtedly be sharing his future work here on Resource Travel, but in the meantime, Follow Morten Rustad on his websiteYouTubeInstagram and Facebook.

Filmmaker Adrien Mauduit  describes La Palma in the Canary islands as one of “few regions in the world where the skies meet the Earth with almost no distinction between the two.” For this reason, the title of his most recent time-lapse film of La Palma is ‘Entre Ciel et Terre’ which translates literally to mean ‘Between the sky and Earth.’

Recorded with the “Canon 6D Baader modified, the Sony a7s, the Sony a7rII and a variety of bright lenses ranging from 14mm to 300mm,” this short film by Mauduit captures the beauty of the dark night sky from the mountain tops of La Palma. Mauduit claims his intent was “to give the audience sort of a confusion as to where they are because that’s precisely the feeling you get when you look up at the stars from the mountains.” The awe-inspiring range of colors Mauduit captures were made possible with his intentional use of an astro-modified camera which “enable [him] to almost get the full range of colors a DSLR can pick up on single frames from nebulae.”

Maudit describes his inclusion of the Tajinaste flower around the 1:40 mark, as inspired by its “majestic and prehistoric” character. As he relayed, “It really adds something special to the special atmosphere I wanted to convey, especially when the milky way galaxy and the sea of clouds move in the background!”

The collection of time-lapses of landscapes, astrospace, and the occasional appearance of the ORM (Observatory Roque de Los Muchachos), the “only human dimension to the movie,” that comprises this stunning film have left us here at Resource Travel enamored and hankering to see more of Mauduit’s films.

Cities in the United States don’t often fit into the narrative we tend to focus on here at Resource Travel. Nature, landscapes, wildlife, unfamiliar cultures in undocumented parts of the world, amongst other things, are usually what gets the most attention. But we love highlighting American cities and the unique experiences one can have (Vegas, is more than just a place to walk around the street with an open container.)

The new time-lapse film from photographer Bobby Gibbons, reminds us that once in a while, you can admire the beauty in your own backyard, even if there is more concrete than trees.

The film, called “LAPSE – A Los Angeles Timelapes” reveals the Southern California City in all its beauty–from iconic landmarks like the Hollywood sign and Dodger stadium, to the pristine beaches and unreal sunsets along the coastline, the imagery offers a quick and beautiful time-lapse tour of the City of Angels.

Gibbons’ has been shooting photography around L.A for more than a decade, but he decided that he “wanted to bring some motion to the mix and create a short of all moving parts.” He learned the techniques of creating a time-lapse and, using a Canon 5D (both a Mark III & Mark IV), spent the next two years capturing his favorite locations in the Los Angeles area.

Gibbons’ says he grew obsessed with finding both the perfect environment and light for each shot and even spent time reshooting certain locations when it wasn’t quite right. A year into the project, through constant scouting, shooting, processing, and reviewing his work (and perhaps his perfectionism as well), he was able to find the direction the film was headed and the story he wanted to convey. From that point, he begin shooting “for the underlining story.”

“L.A. seems to come alive at night,” He says in the descriptions, “The lights migrate around its sprawling buildings, and roads tell their chaotic tale, but during the daytime, life becomes mellow.”

Hard-work pays off.

Los Angeles has never looked so good.

Patagonia is a sparsely populated region at the southernmost end of South America that spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and covers some 400,000 square miles. English travel author, Bruce Chatwin, once wrote in his novel ‘In Patagonia’ that the area was “the farthest place to which man walked from his place of origin.” This idea conjures images of a desolate part of the earth, far removed from the reach of mankind.

Filmmaker Martin Heck’s from TimeStorm’s Films latest offering seems to abide by Chatwin’s observation.

Though the images captured by Heck  are no doubt beautiful, the jagged, looming snow capped mountains, smothered by the transient clouds in the ever-changing light reveal a wild and unpredictable place. That being said, the images are amazingly stunning and if the film doesn’t invoke feelings of pulling a Walter Mitty right now, then I don’t know what will.

We have written about Heck’s work before with his awesome timelapse video of the Atacama Desert in Chile.  His other videos are worth checking out as well. He explores New Zealand, Norway, and offers mind numbing images of an Volcano Calbuco (also in chili) erupting in 2015. We have done you a favor and just put them all in one place. Get ready to slip off into a daydream of pure remote wanderlust.

Yesterday was the first day of spring and a snowstorm fell upon New York City all day. In the beginning of winter, we open our mouths, stick our tongues out, and look to the heavens and enjoy the change of season. But yesterday, all of the East Coast was aggressively pulling beanies down tight on their heads and releasing a (literal) visible breath of frustration.

Listen, I know it could be worse, I know. But I’m just speaking for New York’s consciousness right now so don’t kill the messenger.

The point is that it’s moments like this where scouring the internet for travel stories becomes a necessity. It’s not even that I sit here pretending to be somewhere with warm weather, because I know I’m just as happy to look at a perfect wave in Tahiti as I am studying the Northern lights painting an Artic sky. It’s just the sense of escapism and wonder that these images will convey that will counteract the reality of being hunkered down in my apartments as the world turns white outside.

This film from Timefocus Films is helping fuel my wanderlust, however.

The film showcases the landscapes of New Zealand in 8K, which is way above the resolution most of us can view. But even watching this splendid film in 4k, you will be blown away by the sharp, vibrant visuals.  Using timelapse cinematography, as well as steller lighting and composition, the video showcases New Zealand’s gorgeous and stunning scenery. The cinematic music overlays the imagery enhances the experience, making everything feel even more incredible than the stunning visuals already do. And yes, the video description pays tribute to Lord Of The Rings, so they already know you’ve made the connection.

TimeFocus Fims, based in Czech Republic, specializes in time-lapse videos. And if you enjoyed this, they have videos of Iceland and Jeseniky (Czech Republic) as well, both of which are definitely worth watching.

But wait, I know you don’t want to go back to reality quite yet. Here are some awesome still shots from TimeFocus for your viewing pleasure.

Mike Olbinski has produced some of the best storm time-lapse films of the last few years, but even for a visual artist like him, sometimes inspiration comes from something you cannot even see.

The Phoenix, Arizona based photographer’s latest film, ‘Breathe’ was an idea born on a song. When Olbinski first heard Ex Makina’s song ‘Breathe’ on MusicBed, he immediately pictured the soundtrack playing behind a dramatic black and white storm time-lapse film.

The moment I heard the opening thump of bass…I knew I would be using this song for my film. But then those haunting vocals hit my ears…and blew my mind. It was like a punch deep in my soul. It’s hard to explain that feeling when you first hear a song and you immediately fall in love with it. Almost like you’ve known it all along.

And Olbinski was right. The visuals are stunning, as we are well used to from the photographer, but the heart pounding soundtrack adds a dramatic vibe to the scenes. For a film he didn’t even know he was going to make, Olbinksi hits another home run.

For a dose of earth in its natural beauty, look no further. Jim and Will Pattiz, the two brothers behind “More Than Just Parks“, and whose work we have featured in the past, bring us yet another stunning video of the extravagance that nature has to offer. This time around, they’ve traversed the Rocky Mountains in pursuit of the perfect shots to showcase this unique land, and the results will take your breath away.

Their newest video “ROCKY MOUNTAIN 8K” is a work that took several years to film in the rugged mountains of Colorado. Rocky Mountain National Park sits in the heart of Colorado’s Front Range and spans more than 415 square miles—nearly every inch of it is pure beauty.

We sat down with Jim to talk about the process of making this film, and what makes Rocky Mountain National Park so special to him.

This video features absolutely stunning shots that range through all 4 seasons. How the shooting conditions varied from season to season?
Rocky Mountain National park showcases some of the very best scenery the Rockies have to offer and that our national parks have to offer. Being nestled in the Rockies, the weather can change pretty drastically from season to season. Shooting in the summer we were able to get just about anywhere in the park and were able to film some of the park’s incredible alpine lakes and streams and the wildlife that depend on them. As you get into the Fall you have this incredible backdrop of vibrant color from the aspens that are so abundant throughout the park. Fall also provides an incredible time view wildlife, especially Elk as it’s rutting season. Winter was the most challenging for obvious reasons, but it was amazing to be able to come back to the same lakes we had filmed in the summer and see them frozen over, and to hike the same trails we had in the summer and see the park interpretive signs and benches and trail markers buried in 5-6 feet of snow!

When did you find to be the optimal time of year for visiting the Rocky Mountains?
I think Fall is easily the best time of year to visit Rocky Mountain. The summer crowds are mostly gone. The aspens are ablaze with brilliant yellows and oranges along the hillsides and forests. And the wildlife is seemingly ever-present with the Elk bugling, marmots scurrying, bears getting ready for hibernation, and bighorn sheep making there way into the valleys.

You get up close and personal with some animals in this video, giving a bit of insight into the wildlife of the terrain. Was this intimidating at all? Did you ever feel like you were impeding on unsafe animal territory?
It’s always an incredible experience to get up close and personal with animals and nature in our national parks and our public lands. Rocky Mountain National Park has many of the largest land mammals found in North America. It’s important to give these animals their space and respect that this is their home and you are simply visiting. I try to always keep that in mind when I’m out hiking and enjoying our public lands and I find that as long as you keep that respect for these animals and give them their space they’ll go on about their business.
You have a lot of shots that feature the sun setting or rising, changing the colors in the frame drastically. What time of day do you find to be the best in capturing the true beauty of these mountains?
This is a great question as this varies from park to park. We found that sunrise was the best time to capture the changing light and colors in Rocky Mountain. A nice early wake up call by a placid mountain lake or a sweeping view of the valleys and peaks can afford some incredible views.
No doubt, the Pattiz Brothers are passionate about showcasing America’s National Parks and public lands. Lucky for us, they endure the harshest enviornments to bring us along for the beautiful ride.

Michael Shainblum has been to many places all over the world, and more times than not, he has returned home with enough photography content to create what he is most known for. Dream like and unique time-lapse films.

Recently, Shainblum visited the Italy’s Dolomite mountains with Andrew Studer, and together the team created a beautiful look at these mystical looking mountains. While Shainblum handled the time-lapse, Studer contributed the drone clips that are sprinkled into the two and a half minute film.

Shainblum and Studer have been partnering alot lately, and were the team behind these incredible eclipse photos.

There is no doubt the two travel photographers are talented by themselves, but as evident by their latest works, they make a great team. It will be exciting to see what Michael Shainblum and Andrew Studer come up with next!

Shainblum posted an extended photo story on his blog that includes some incredible photos. Check it out on his blog.

Photographer and filmmaker Taylor Gray is a busy man. In between studies, the full time student at Oregon State finds his balance by finding remote and beautiful wilderness in the Pacific Northwest, always with camera in hand. He has told us about how he finds himself lucky to have found his inspiration at such a young age and shown us how to find a unique angle to witness the famed Yosemite Firefalls.

But the 19 year old is just getting started, as evident by his latest time-lapse film, ‘Denali’, which was filmed on his recent trip to explore the United State’s third largest National Park encompassing over 4.7 million acres. Gray filmed both in an out of the park (the drone footage is from the Old Denali Highway) over the course of three days, which is impressive when you see the amount of scenes included in the final film.  ‘Denali’ is a beautiful look at one of the most remote and unspoiled wilderness areas in North America.

We sat with Gray to talk about the film, what makes Denali so special and what’s next for the already accomplished artist.

“It’s no secret you have an deep love of nature. Being that this was your first trip to Denali, how does the scenery and feeling of being truly remote compare to the places you have visited in the lower 48?”

The area is completely unlike anywhere I’ve ever been too. When you’re constantly surrounded by these enormous mountains, it puts things into perspective and can make a person feel small. There aren’t really any words that can adequately describe the feeling the place gives me, so the best thing you can do is visit Denali and experience it’s beauty for yourself.

“This film is all about dancing light. It’s pretty amazing how the perfect light shined through the clouds and moves across the landscape. What was going through your head when you were making this? Did you know the clips were going to be this good?”

When I set up these different shots, I had a picture in my mind of what I wanted, but unfortunately it’s not possible to see exactly where the light is going and what it will do. There would be times where the light would be perfect, but after a few short minutes of time lapsing, the conditions would sort of fall apart and I would have to move on. It was very hit and miss, especially in an area like Denali where the weather can change in an instant, but that’s what makes it interesting.

You are a full time student, but still find time to fuel your creative side. So what’s next on the adventure bucket list?

Last year, I spent most of my free time creating an aerial film centered around Oregon’s rugged coastline and I got to become pretty familiar with the area. This time around I am planning to create more content around Central and Eastern Oregon, where there are more mountains and desert area. I am excited to gain the same familiarity in these regions as I had on the coast last year. Besides that, who knows. Maybe something unexpected will fall into my lap!

At this point, it seems like Martin Heck from Timestorm Films is our personal guide to the most beautiful locations on the planet. He has shown us the power of the Volcano Calbuco, the raw beauty of New Zealand and the harsh landscapes of the Chile’s Atacama Desert. But through it all, it seems that the Dolomite mountains in Northern Italy are Heck’s preferred location to shoot. His latest timelapse film from the region is the most recent addition to a series he has been working on for years.

I asked Heck what it was about the Dolomites that kept him coming back for more.

The Dolomites feel like my second home. My family has a house there so naturally I spent a lot of time in this mountain paradise on holidays when I was younger. Now that I’m living only 2-3h away by car its just natural that I take every chance to return there as often as I can. And even after traveling to some very remote and beautiful places around the world I can say that the Dolomites can easily keep up with them.

Lucky for us, Heck’s close proximity and inspiration from the Dolomites doesn’t seem to be waning. So look forward to many more of these incredible views in the near future.

The Atacama Desert is Chile is home to some of the darkest skies in the world, but the 600-mile strip of land also presents harsh environments. Almost completely free of rainfall, the dry desert holds stony terrain, salt lakes, sand, and felsic lava that make the photography rewarding for those enough to brave the conditions that can affect not a photographer’s body, but also their sensitive camera equipment.

Martin Heck from Timestorm Films is no stranger to harsh conditions though. From his stunning films highlighting the eruption of Calbuco volcano to a frigid winter in the Dolomite mountains, Heck has sacrificed his camera equipment time and time again to bring us into the places that few dare brave. His most recent film, ‘Nox Atacama’ is no different. Heck shows us why this rugged strip of land just west of the Andes mountains in Chile is one of the most spectacular locations in South America, although not for travelers looking for luxury, comfort, or clean camera equipment.

New Zealand is a photographer’s paradise. Jagged mountains, stunning lakes, and endless shoreline make the island country off the coast of Australia a popular destination for anyone itching for a road trip adventure. But while most choose to visit New Zealand in the comfortable summer months, photographer and filmmaker Sam Deuchrass shows us that winter is a time of year that is not to be missed with his new time-lapse film.

New Zealand’s most famous natural landmarks make an appearance, but take on a dramatic new life as the snow takes hold as the southern lights dance in the skies above. The film shows us that winter may be the most optimal time to visit New Zealand. While you will most surely have to dress in layers, the harsh weather will assure that you are almost always alone while seeing some of New Zealand’s wonders in a different light.

Follow Sam Deuchrass’ adventures on his website, Instagram and Facebook.

Shawn Reeder is as outdoor focused as photographer’s and filmmakers come. For years, I have been watching Reeder create time-lapse films showing nature at its finest for years, so I was pleasantly surprised to see buildings in Reeder’s latest film which highlights over two months on Italian soil over three separate trips.

I sat down with Reeder to talk about the making of his latest film, and why he has made such a strong connection with Italy over the years.

You always strike me as an artist who prefers solitude on a remote mountain peak in the far reaching corners of nature. But this time-lapse is a bit different. You spent alot of time in cities and villages in Italy. What makes the Italian villages so easy for even nature lovers to enjoy?

Well it seems as though you know me well as my natural tendency has always been to seek out solitude in nature, yet like most artists, there is more to me than meets the eye. After spending most of my early adulthood fully immersed in adventurous pursuits in nature, my thirties brought about new desires to also explore culture alongside adventure. Italy is the perfect blend for me with some of the most beautiful mountains in the world, a stunning coast, and some of the most picturesque cities and villages you’ll ever come across.

I was introduced to the country through traveling with a woman I love, and that trip set the tone for what has ultimately become a love affair for me. I love the people, the culture, the food, the history, and all of those aspects seem to be built right into the stunning nature that surrounds and encompasses everything. The Italians sure know how to build their cities and villages in harmony with the natural world, and I think that’s why Europe calls to me much more than my home country the US when it comes to exploring cities, towns, and villages. Plus there’s just something about the ancient history of the rich Italian culture and its traditions that feels much more authentic and connected than the disconnected state of American society with our big box stores, isolating commutes, and TV-centric society. Italy has a wealth of experiences to offer the adventurous traveler who is also inspired by exploring a rich culture.

At the 1 minute mark, you are taking a self portrait time-lapse on an incredible lake. Can you tell us a little about that location, and more importantly, how long were you standing still for?

One of my favorite regions in northern Italy is the spectacular Dolomiti, a region of the Alps with a very distinct and unique character. Deep valleys amongst soaring craggy peaks create some of the most gorgeous mountain scenes I’ve ever seen. Lago di Sorapis outside of Cortina d’Ampezzo is a true gem with its unmistakeable turquoise waters and towering mountains. It’s a moderate hike of only a few miles to this backcountry delight, yet be forewarned that a weekend jaunt during prime summer season might make you feel like you’re walking down an alley in Venice rather than deep in the mountains as you’ll be shoulder to shoulder with hundreds of others making the trek to this alpine paradise. I started to hike out one Sunday afternoon and after only a kilometer or so I was completely overwhelmed and turned around. I came back the next day on Monday and nearly had the trail to myself. I was so enamored by the beauty of the lake and the majestic cirque in which it resides, that I just stood there for about 10 minutes fully taking it in as the clouds danced above and light shone down upon this awe-inspiring scene.

What are your absolute three favorite things about Italy?

It’s hard to nail down my three favorite things about Italy, because it really is a sum of so many aspects that make me fall deeper and deeper in love with each subsequent visit. But a few things rise above the best, and first and foremost it would have to be the mountains in the north. From the stunning Alps on the border with France to the majestic views and picturesque villages of Lago di Como, to the awe-inspiring presence of the Dolomiti, the mountains of northern Italy are some of the most beautiful and dramatic in the world and will take your breath away.

Secondly, I love the slow paced lifestyle and the feel of the culture. As much as it pained me at first, once I grew accustomed to the midday riposo (the Italian version of the common Latin Siesta), I appreciated the midday closure of shops while people took some personal time for themselves, especially in the smaller villages. And when you talk of the culture, you can’t help but mention the food and cappuccinos! My time in Italy really did help foster a love for espresso and I’ve spent my entire life loving Italian food, but even with growing up in an Italian family I never knew just how good it was until traveling throughout the homeland exploring authentic local trattorias. While I typically curtail the amount of wheat I eat when here in the US, I happily ate bread, pizza, and pasta nearly every day in Italy and never felt weighed down like I do here at home. And whatever you do, don’t miss the pesto!!!!

And finally, for someone who has always traveled primary for the mountains and landscape of whatever destination usually calls to me, the people of Italy have touched my heart, opened my soul, and lit the fire of my passions. There are the dear friends who have taken me into their home for weeks on end, cooked endless meals and driven me deep into the mountains all while pondering the meaning of life. And the new friends I met while traveling who enthusiastically showed me their favorite “local spots” whether it was a hidden waterfall or the best cappuccino in town. There is the random conversations on the train and in coffee shops and the smiling faces selling me a slice of pizza at 1am in Rome. The group of students singing on the Spanish Steps, the gifted painter creating art in Varrena and the spontaneous and unexpected lovers who shone light into my journeys, I love you all and can’t wait to return for more time with you. Grazie, grazie!

All of Shawn Reeder’s artwork can be found on his website. His Vimeo-page is also full of awe inspiring imagery, and he is of course also on Facebook and Instagram.

Even though the video was filmed over a three month period, the team from Beverly Hills Aerials wanted to give a sense of what a 24-hour period felt like in the second most populated city in the United States. Los Angeles. With a population of almost 4 million people, the sprawling metropolis always seems vibrant and active, especially from above.

The video opens with a quiet downtown scene at 12:01am and flawlessly takes us through a California sunrise, the chaotic mid-day, colorful sunsets and finally, seeing the never ending freeways still bustling well into the night.

The Vimeo description says that the team shot the scenes from over 50 locations while paying particular attention to the time of day, in order to tell the 24-hour story that they had sought. After the filming was complete, they had over 4TB of photos that wound up being consolidated to this two-minute film, which was matched perfectly with an original song “Lost Panorama” by To Be Decided.

The word is out. Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is quickly becoming a household name, thanks to a pretty intense beginning to 2017. Starting on New Year’s Eve, the Kīlauea Volcano’s Kamokuna ocean entry was shooting a heavy stream of lava into the ocean. Usually, the lava would cool, and the amazing show would be over within a day or two. But, the lava didn’t cool, and the massive flow of lava kept coming. And coming. And coming. Photographers got word, and before I knew it, many photographers that I follow on my Facebook were posting incredible captures, some even with the Milky Way and moon looming in the background.

Of course, the Pattiz brother’s behind More Than Just Parks was there as well, but their content was a welcome difference from what I had been seeing. While they did focus on the fiery lava, the team wasn’t limited to just photographing it and they traveled throughout the park, showing us that Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is much more than just lava.

Having been in awe of this National Park for quite a while, I wanted to get more information from Jim about his experience of creating the latest film for More Than Just Parks.”

It was a nice change of pace to see you explore the entire National Park, showing us there is so much more to this park than just the lava flow. Was it hard forcing yourself to branch off into different locations knowing that awesome lava flow was still going hard?

Yes it was definitely difficult pulling ourselves away from that incredible lava flow. Although to be completely honest we were forced out of there each time by clouds of hazardous gas spewing from the lava as it hit the ocean.

Have you ever worked in an environment where the park’s conditions change so rapidly and can even be dangerous?

No it’s safe to say we have never worked in such rapidly changing and dangerous conditions. It’s important to watch the winds and follow the recommendations and requirements of the park. Lava is a serious thing, and it’s awesome to see, but it can also be very dangerous.

If the lava stopped flowing, would you recommend visiting the park for everything else that it has to offer?

Great question! Yes without a doubt I would recommend it regardless of the lava flow. There’s so much to see. The Thurston Lava Tube is really cool and set back in a rainforest where you can find rare birds and a respite from the harsh volcanic landscape. There’s also an area along the coast with over 23,000 petroglyphs that are incredibly fascinating to look at and explore.

Ok, we are sold. Volcanos, rain forests and tropical weather? You won’t have to twist our arms.
